Some mountain legends are about monsters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Others are about whoever was brave enough to live alongside them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If the stories are true, Hootin Annie did both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Deep in the mountains of Haywood County, long before paved roads wound through the Smokies, people spoke of a mysterious woman whose cries echoed across the ridges after sunset. Some called her a witch. Others believed she was a banshee. A few insisted she wasn’t entirely human at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They simply called her Hootin Annie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Depending on who told the story, Annie wandered the mountains carrying secrets few dared ask about. Some claimed she guarded hidden treasures. Others believed she knew where the Boojum lived and was the only soul the creature trusted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No two stories ever matched perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Only the name remained the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Campers claimed to hear strange calls rolling through the hollows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hunters spoke of catching glimpses of a woman disappearing between the trees where no person could have climbed so quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The mountains have always had sounds that are difficult to explain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Owls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Foxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wind moving through laurel thickets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It’s easy to imagine how those noises became Hootin Annie over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or maybe the mountains were simply borrowing her voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Either way, if someone tells you they heard Annie calling from the ridge after dark, don’t expect them to volunteer to go looking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
