The Wampus Cat was told to make sure you got home before dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For generations, stories of the Wampus Cat have echoed through the mountains of Western North Carolina. Descriptions vary depending on who’s telling the tale, but nearly everyone agrees on two things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It wasn’t an ordinary cat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And if you heard it before you saw it, you were already too close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some described it as a massive mountain lion with glowing eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Others claimed it stood nearly as tall as a bear, covered in dark fur with the face of a wildcat and the body of something that didn’t belong anywhere in nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A few stories insisted it could let out a scream so unsettling it carried for miles through the hollows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The legend has deep roots in Appalachian folklore, though many versions overlap with Cherokee traditions and neighboring mountain communities. Over time, the stories changed, borrowing details from one another until no two sounded exactly alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That may be why the Wampus Cat has survived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It isn’t one story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It’s a hundred stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hunters blamed strange noises on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Children were warned about wandering too far into the woods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Every unexplained scream in the night became another reason to believe the old folks might’ve known something after all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wildlife experts point to more familiar suspects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bobcats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mountain lions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Black bears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Foxes have been known to make screams that can stop a grown man in his tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Those explanations answer a lot of questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Just maybe not all of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The mountains have a way of keeping their secrets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And every now and then, when the woods go quiet all at once, it’s easy to understand why the Wampus Cat still prowls North Carolina folklore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
