Every mountain has its stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most of them stay in the mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Boojum is one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Long before Bigfoot became the celebrity of the cryptid world, folks in the Smokies were already talking about something strange roaming the ridges after dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They called it the Boojum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nobody seems entirely sure where the name came from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or exactly what the Boojum looked like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That’s part of what makes it different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Unlike many cryptids, the Boojum isn’t tied to one dramatic sighting or one unforgettable description. Instead, it exists in stories passed from porch to porch and campfire to campfire across Western North Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ask five people what a Boojum is and you might get five different answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some describe it as a shaggy, bear-sized creature walking upright through the woods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Others swear it’s smaller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More curious than dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A few old-timers claimed you never really saw the Boojum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You only knew it had been nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A strange whistle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Heavy footsteps in leaves that suddenly stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The feeling that something was watching from just beyond the next rhododendron thicket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For generations, the Boojum became a catch-all explanation for the things people couldn’t identify in the mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That noise outside the cabin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Probably the Boojum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Something moving through the fog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Didn’t catch any trout today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Well… maybe the Boojum had other plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Unlike other cryptids, nobody ever organized massive hunting parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There weren’t newspaper headlines stretching across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Boojum never seemed interested in becoming famous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It simply settled into Appalachian folklore, comfortable being whispered about instead of shouted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Skeptics say the Boojum was probably never one creature at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe it was black bears glimpsed at dusk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe it was stories borrowed from neighboring mountain communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe it was simply the mountains reminding people there are places where not everything needs an explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That might be the most believable theory of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The older these mountains get, the less they seem interested in answering our questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
