The Shocco Monster

NC Cryptid File #010

Every small town has a road people avoid after dark.

In Warren County, some folks said that road belonged to the Shocco Monster.

The stories came from the wooded countryside around Shocco Creek, where strange footprints, eerie noises and unexpected encounters became part of local conversation.

Witnesses described a large, hairy creature walking upright through the forest.

Some estimated it stood seven feet tall.

Others remembered only its glowing eyes disappearing into the trees.

Unlike many famous cryptids, the Shocco Monster never attracted television crews or national headlines.

It didn’t need them.

The legend survived because neighbors kept telling it.

One hunting trip became another story.

One unexplained sound became another sighting.

One generation passed the tale to the next.

Wildlife experts have suggested black bears standing upright, misidentified animals or simple tricks of light and shadow.

Those explanations are reasonable.

But anyone who’s spent enough time in the woods knows there are moments when everything suddenly goes quiet.

And that’s usually when the stories begin.

Whether the Shocco Monster was ever real may never be answered.

But around Warren County, people still know exactly which stretch of woods they’re talking about.
