If Wilmington has a mascot, it’s probably the USS North Carolina.

If Wilmington has a mystery, it’s Willie.

Long before beach houses lined the coast and cargo ships steamed up the Cape Fear River, people were looking out over the water and claiming something else was already there.

Something long.

Something that wasn’t supposed to exist.

The story begins in 1524.

Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano was sailing the Carolina coast when one of his crew reportedly spotted what they described as “a great snake” resting on top of the ocean waves near shore.

One sighting doesn’t make a legend.

But the story refused to sink.

More than 200 years later, references to the creature surfaced again as Wilmington itself was beginning to take shape.

Then came the Civil War.

In 1865, Union soldier and naturalist James Calden wrote about reports from Wilmington residents who claimed a giant sea serpent regularly swam near the mouth of the Cape Fear River. They described a creature around 40 feet long and nearly 4 feet wide, dark gray in color, with a snake-like head that would rise above the water before disappearing beneath the surface. Others reported seeing strange humps gliding across calm water or wakes moving against the tide with no boat in sight.

Somewhere along the way, locals gave it a name.

Willie.

A nod to Wilmington.

It wasn’t a monster people feared as much as one they simply accepted might be out there.

Over the years, skeptics have suggested the sightings could have been giant oarfish, sea turtles swimming in a line, schools of rays, or other marine animals playing tricks on the eye. That’s certainly possible.

But legends don’t survive for five centuries because they’re easily explained.

They survive because every generation finds someone willing to look out across the water and say…

“What was that?”

Maybe Willie never existed.

Or maybe there’s a reason sailors have always respected the water more than they’ve tried to explain it.
